Over 1,000 youths arrested for bribery since 2013: MACC

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Out of the 1,902 individuals caught for corruption since 2013, 1,045 of them were below the age of 40.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention) Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said the youths included professionals.

“They (the youths) have in their minds that action will not be taken against them for corruption. This must be changed from the school level,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after appearing as a panelist in an anti-corruption forum and closing the “Wira Anti-Rasuah” (WAR) programme in Tanah Rata here today.

Mustafar said knowledge about the dangers of corruption should be passed to the public especially schoolchildren so that it is better understood and avoided when they enter the job market.

Mustafar said he hoped the programme organised by the MACC would prevent youths from being involved in corruption.

Commenting on claims by Cameron Highlands residents that enforcement officers involved in “Ops Gading” to weed out illegals and illegal land encroachment, had asked for bribes, Mustafar said he hope the locals would lodge reports with the MACC.

He said if the residents had information of corrupt activities, they should not distribute anonymous letters or use the media to spread that information.

He added the informants need not worry about their safety as they were protected under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010. --BERNAMA
