KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim was today announced as the successor to outgoing Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, who had helmed the post for 16 years.
Muhammad was deputy governor and director of BNM, which he joined in 1984.
He has served in the areas of bank regulation and supervision, strategic planning, payment systems, insurance, offshore banking and treasury and financial markets.
He holds an accounting degree from the University of Malaya, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Banking and Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia.
He also holds a Masters Degree from Harvard University.
Previously, Muhammad was the managing director of Danamodal Nasional Berhad, a bank recapitalisation agency created during the Asian financial crisis.
Muhammad was also a former commissioner of the Securities Commission of Malaysia and had served as a council member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).
He has served as an independent director at Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) since April 2014.
His other positions include as a director of Kumpulan Wang Persaraan, and the Finance Accreditation Agency.
Muhammad is also a trustee of Tun Ismail Ali Chair Council. He is a council member of the Malaysian Bankers Institute and an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Bankers Malaysia.
