Vietnamese fishermen pay the price for possessing monitor lizards, wild boar

KUALA TERENGGANU: Five Vietnamese fishermen, including the boat’s skipper, were punished by the Sessions Court today for illegally possessing monitor lizards and wild boar.

Four of them were jailed six months each for being in possession of four monitor lizards, while the skipper was fined RM6,000.

Tran Huang Thanh, 34; Nguyeng Qui Tam, 36; Duan Van Vai, 38; and Nguyeng Van Khai, 44; pleaded guilty for keeping the protected species without a licence after being detained by Wildlife and National Parks officers at the Chendering Recreational Park at 4.45pm on May 8.

Sessions Court Judge Rodiah Mohamad delivered the judgment, which was translated into Vietnamese to the accused by an interpreter.

Rodiah also handed the fishing boat’s skipper Tran Phuoc Hai, 40, a RM6,000 fine for storing the wild boar in his vessel which was berthed at Fisheries Board jetty in Chendering at 4.30pm on May 8.
