KUALA LUMPUR: Motorcyclists who take the law into their own hands by damaging other vehicles using the emergency lane could be charged under the Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief.
City traffic police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohd Nadzri Hussain said it is an offence, regardless of whether it is the motorcyclists' intention to chase away other motorists from the emergency lane.
He was referring to a video of "vigilante" motorcyclists who entered the emergency lane, kicking the side mirrors of motorists as a means of teaching those motorists a lesson.
Mohd Nadzri said the motorcyclists had committed a double offence by also occupying the emergency lane.
"The emergency lane cannot be occupied even by motorcycles," he said, when contacted by the New Straits Times.
Yesterday, the video went viral on social media after it was uploaded by a Facebook user. Garnering more than 11,000 likes and 14,000 shares, the video received mixed reviews from the netizens who praised the motorcyclists for their action.
While some were irked by the those "vigilantes" who took matters into their own hands.
It is however unclear when or where the incident occurred, and who recorded the video.
