Motorcyclist dies after MPV veers into emergency lane on Penang Bridge

GEORGE TOWN: A motorcyclist died following an accident involving a Perodua Alza MPV on the Penang Bridge, near Seberang Perai, yesterday evening.

According to Buletin Utama, the collision occurred at 6.35pm at KM7.4 of the bridge when the Perodua Alza driver allegedly moved into the emergency lane to switch drivers and collided with the motorcycle.

The 38-year-old male motorcyclist suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Northeast police chief Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid confirmed the incident, saying, "The post-mortem of the victim was conducted today at Penang General Hospital (HPP) to determine the cause of death."

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Razlam said that the 22-year-old Alza driver was heading towards Kuala Lumpur, while the motorcyclist was travelling to Butterworth.

"At the time of the incident, both were driving in the left lane of the bridge. However, the Alza driver suddenly entered the emergency lane, resulting in the collision with the motorcyclist.

"The severely injured victim was confirmed dead by medical officers at the scene."

The accident, which was captured through a dashboard camera, has since gone viral.
