KUALA LUMPUR: By the end of next year, you may be able to drive all the way from Malaysia to India in less than a week.
The Economic Times of India recently reported that a 1,400km highway was being constructed. It will link Thailand's Mae Sot district to Moreh in India.
The planned highway starts in the eastern region of India and ends in city of Tamu in Myanmar.
The newspaper’s online portal quoted Indian Ambassador to Thailand Bhagwant Singh Bishnoi saying that 73 bridges in Myanmar, which were built more than seven decades ago during World War 2, were being renovated with funding from India to allow vehicles to cross the highway safely.
When repair works are completed in 18 months, the highway could be opened to traffic from all three countries, the ambassador said.
The distance from Bukit Kayu Hitam to Mae Sot is approximately 1,500km, making a trip from the Malaysian border to Moreh, India, just shy of 3,000km.
