KUALA LUMPUR: Iconic German rock band Scorpions is set to perform at Singapore’s Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre on Oct 21.
This milestone show is part of the group’s 50th Anniversary World Tour, and it is brought by LAMC Productions.
Continental Europe’s most successful rock band comprises longtime members -- Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (guitar) and Matthias Jabs (guitar), alongside James Kottak (drums) and Paweł Mąciwoda (bass).
Scorpions has built a career-spanning setlist of hits, anthems, ballads and vintage classics.
Founded in Hannover, West Germany in 1965, Scorpions was part of the first wave of metal in the 1970s with their debut album, Lonesome Crow, released in 1972. The band rose to arena status with seminal releases -- Lovedrive, Virgin Killer and Animal Magnetism.
In the 1980s, Scorpions amassed a string of Billboard chart toppers from Love At First Sting and Blackout, including multiple Top 10 singles Rock You Like A Hurricane and No One Like You, to a string of successful singles such as Send Me An Angel, Still Loving You and Winds Of Change.
The band was also ranked No. 46 on VH1’s Greatest Artistes of Hard Rock and their hit Rock You Like A Hurricane also landed at No. 18 on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs.
Celebrated across the globe, the famed rock act has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and has received multiple honours at the music awards, a postage stamp in Brazil, its Star on Hollywood Rock Walk and Echo honors.
Most recently, the rock band was honoured with the Lower Saxon State award.
In these 50 years, they have become Germany’s or rather Continental Europe’s most successful rock band, the living proof that not only VW, Mercedes or BMW are able to compete internationally, but classic rock music made in Germany as well.
Countless bands, including the Smashing Pumpkins as well as Green Day, Korn, System Of A Down or Queensryche have covered songs by the Scorpions throughout the years. Rock You Like A Hurricane itself has been covered over 150 times by different musicians.
In Germany, the Scorpions has sold more than one million copies of Crazy World alone. The rock act deservedly received double platinum for it in 1991.
Additionally, 1991 hits Sting In The Tail and the Winds Of Change were awarded platinum in Germany. Incidentally, the latter was No.1 in seven countries.
In 1988, they were the first Western rock band to play to sold-out shows five days in a row in Russia.
Their performance at the 1995 legendary Rock in Rio festival was documented on the epochal live album World Wide Live, which was the band’s final breakthrough in the US, cementing its reputation as one of the hottest live bands around.
