KUALA LUMPUR: Uber was allowed to withdraw its bid to intervene in a lawsuit targeting it and two other ride-hailing services while still having liberty to file a fresh related suit.
This was the outcome of a ruling issued by the High Court here today in the legal action by 102 taxi drivers against the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).
The taxi drivers' suit had sought for a court order to force SPAD to ban Uber and the other two ride-sharing services - GrabCar and Blacklane.
The taxi drivers' lawyer R. Kengadharan confirmed the ruling made by High Court senior assistant registrar Ti Pei Si.
Kengadharan said Uber's withdrawal application was allowed as the merits of the suit had not been heard yet.
He said the High Court had also set Sept 26 for hearing of SPAD's bid to strike out the cabbies' suit.
On Dec 31 last year, the taxi drivers filed the legal action, seeking a declaration that the three ride-sharing services were illegal.
They also seek general damages, interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
