No shame, only pride on the faces of Malaysians as our team wins Olympics silver

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia may have failed to take home gold in the Rio Olympics badminton doubles, but there was only pride etched on the faces of the hundreds of fans gathered at Sri Pentas, Bandar Utama.

The Malaysian supporters brought the house down after Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying won Malaysia's second Olympic silver medal of the Rio Games last night.

The mixed doubles match against Indonesia's Ahmad Tontowi and Liliyana Natsir at 11.30pm drew fans from all over the Klang Valley, most of whom were clad in the Team Malaysia jersey.

A rush of excitement and adrenaline ripped through the crowd as the Malaysian duo fought for the much-coveted gold medal.

The audience were kept on the edge of their seats as they witnessed the intense and tight competition between the shuttlers.

Fazrul Khairy, 25, who came all the way from Shah Alam, said despite winning second place, Chan and Goh displayed admirable grit.

"They were under a lot of pressure but they performed really well. I am proud of them for bagging the silver medal," he said.

Olivia Heng, 21, from Ampang pinned her hopes on the next gold medal match on Friday.

"I am confident that Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong will be able to bring home Malaysia's first ever Olympic gold medal," she said.

Earlier, the crowd also rallied behind Datuk Lee Chong Wei, who defeated Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen in the men's singles quarter final match which advanced him to the singles semi-finals.

In between the two matches, the audience were entertained by local artistes and quizzes with freebies.
