PM Najib launches LRT3 project, set to benefit two million people by 2020 [VIDEO]

SHAH ALAM: The LRT3 project is set to benefit an estimated two million people upon its completion in 2020.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, speaking at the project’s official launch by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd today, said the project was also proof of the government’s determination to improve the livability of the residents of the Klang Valley and Greater Kuala Lumpur.

“The LRT3 is testament to the government’s relentless effort in improving livability in Greater Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley by easing traffic congestion, providing better accessibility and substantially improving and integrating the urban public transportation for the people,” he said at the launch, held at the Stadium Malawati here.

He said the LRT3, spanning 37km with 26 stations from Bandar Utama to Klang, is set to benefit an estimated two million people in the area upon its completion in 2020.

He added that the population of Greater Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley is expected to grow to 10 million by 2020.

Construction work on the line is scheduled to begin in early 2017 and is expected to be completed by Aug 31, 2020.

It has been estimated that the cost of the LRT3 project is about RM9 billion.

Meanwhile, the prime minister also announced that commuters traveling on Rapid KL, LRT and Monorail services will be able to enjoy a 50 per cent discount between 6am and 7am from Sept 16.

He said the discount is expected to benefit more than 500,000 commuters who use the services daily.

“We recognise the support of the commuting public to the public transport system and services in Greater Kuala Lumpur.

“I am certain this will contribute to easing the congestion at peak hours on the LRT and Monorail lines as commuters can take advantage of this early bird discount by coming out slightly earlier,” he said.
