KUALA LUMPUR: Four 'Mat Rempit' who pulled off the 'Superman' and wheelie stunts last month landed themselves in jail and were fined RM5,500 each by the magistrate's court today.
Magistrate Noorul Fhaiez Mohd Nayan sentenced Mohd Shahrul Nizam Salleh, 20, to a days' jail; Ahmad Safril Husairi, 18, to two days jail; Ahmad Faiz Rahim, 21, to three days jail; and Amir Firdaus Ahmad Zaharudin, 24, to four days jail after they pleaded guilty to the offence.
She ordered the quartet to serve another three months in jail if they fail to settle the fine.
The court also ordered their driving licences to be revoked and barred them from applying for a new licence for the next two years.
Unrepresented Shahrul, Faiz, Safril and Amir Firdaus were separately charged with riding their motorcycles in a reckless and dangerous manner by performing the ‘superman’ and ‘wheelie’ acts on Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Parlimen and along the Duta–Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE) between July 24 and August 28.
They were charged under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which provides a maximum jail term of five years and a minimum RM5,000 fine, as well as revocation of the offender's driving licence, upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the accused were arrested in an operation codenamed 'Ops Samseng Jalan Raya' conducted by the city traffic police from the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters.
Prosecuting officer Inspector Hashimah Hashim appeared for the prosecution.
