PUTRAJAYA: The government has agreed to allow the hiring of security guards from two other countries apart from Nepal.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, announcing this today, said the two countries will be decided upon soon.
The ministry will identify the countries and bring the matter to the Cabinet.
“We have not finalised the countries but the basic requirements have been prepared.
“After the Cabinet’s approval, we will table it in Parliament,” said Zahid, after a meeting with the National Security Industry board of directors, management and customers, here today.
Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, stressed that the ratio between local and foreign security guards must be maintained despite the new source countries.
He added that the Home Ministry has also formally rejected Education Ministry’s request to hire People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) members as security guards.
He said schools can only hire security guards from private firms and that RELA members can only be employed if they are absorbed as staff.
Present at the meeting were deputy home ministers Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, Masir Kujat, ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim and Security Services Association Malaysia (PPKKM) president Datuk Seri Mustapa Ali.
