Bersih 5 convoy causes barely a stir in Pahang

KUANTAN: The Bersih 5 convoy, which moved from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan today, was met with a lukewarm response.

During their first stop in front of the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) here – which is also site of the weekly Sunday morning market – only 50 individuals approached the convoy.

Bersih members spent some 30 minutes handing out flyers to marketgoers.

Turnout was also visibly low at Taman Gelora and Teluk Cempedak, where the convoy headed to next.

Kuantan Member of Parliament Fuziah Salleh, who was also present at today’s roadshow stops, confirmed that the convoy will head to Pekan next Saturday.

The convoy was initially scheduled to make a stop at the district today, but the plan was scrapped out of respect of the Sultan of Pahang’s birthday, which falls tomorrow.

Last week, two police reports were lodged against the Bersih 5 convoy by the Pekan Umno Youth and the Pekan Youth Council.

Pekan Umno Youth chief Shahruddin Ahmad said stern action must be taken against the convoy, as it could disrupt public order in the town.

The Bersih 5 nationwide roadshow kicked off on Oct 1 and is expected to run until its major rally day on Nov 19.
