Sarawak decides against tabling motion to reclaim state rights

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has decided against tabling a motion to reclaim the state's rights in its state assembly sitting next week.

This, said Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem, is because Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is ready to discuss the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

Adenan said Najib is ready to look into whether the Malaysia Agreement and Federal Constitution has been misinterpreted.

“On Saturday, our Prime Minister (Najib) had said that he is ready and is keeping an open mind to discuss the agreement. In view of what he said, I am confident that he will do the right thing.

“Therefore, there is no need to pass a resolution in demanding our rights. I trust him (Najib).

“We believe in consultation instead of confrontation,” said Adenan after chairing a pre-state assembly sitting meeting here today.

Adenan was commenting on a statement made by Najib in Kota Kinabalu recently on a similar issue, that he had was keeping an open mind on the subject and would not wish to take away the rights of the Sabahans.

Last month, Adenan had said that the state government would table a motion at its assembly sitting to reclaim Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
