Half a tonne of crude oil involved in Negri Sembilan spill, cleanup underway

PORT DICKSON: Clean up operation for an oil spill at one nautical mile off the Shell Jetty at Pantai Batu 1, Jalan Pantai here are ongoing, authorities announced today.

District Fire and Rescue Department chief operating officer Mohd Kamil Abd Jabbar said the department received an emergency call at 8.30am and deployed six personnel on one fire engine and two boats to the scene.

“We also received help from Teluk Kemang Fire and Rescue Department where they assisted us with one prime mover and a boat for the operation,” he said.

Mohd Kamil added 280 kilogrammes absorbent had been set up around the affected area, to round up and lift the half a tonne of crude oil.

“Other departments involved in the operation such as Department of Environment, Petroleum Industry of Malaysia Mutual Aid Group (PIMAG) and employees from the petroleum company,” he said.

He added, PIMAG would be in charge in the cleaning process as the deparment has the expertise to control the spill.

“Based on the information received, the spill is not serious and PIMAG is trying to break down the oil molecules,” he said.
