60 tonnes of rubbish collected in KK cleanup

KOTA KINABALU: A cleanup initiative at Kampung Tanjung Aru Lama and Baru here garnered 60 tonnes of trash.

The rubbish, which could fill about 30 average-sized cars, was collected by the village residents and personnel from several departments under Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) throughout the week.

City mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said the cleanup covered pathways and shorelines, and included installing waste traps, painting garbage enclosures, trimming trees, grass-cutting, drain-cleaning, controlling stray dogs, and mosquito fogging.

"The KK Cleanup Day 3.0: Tanjung Aru programme held today is the third this year organised by DBKK.

"This programme aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.

"The objective is to create social awareness among residents and businesses in the Kota Kinabalu city area through ongoing campaigns and cleaning activities.

"I am very pleased to see so many city residents supporting this initiative and hope that by the end of this programme, we can further enhance our awareness of proper waste disposal, encourage effective environmentally friendly activities, and strengthen cooperation between government agencies, particularly the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, and all segments of society."

He urged all Kampung Tanjung Aru residents to maintain cleanliness, stressing that such efforts should continue beyond the programme's duration.
