Wings won't let rumours fly: Awie denies lead guitarist wants out

KUALA LUMPUR: Families sometimes encounter disagreements, but they are usually resolved behind closed doors.

This is what rock band Wings lead singer Ahmad Azhar Othman, or Awie, 48, told the New Straits Times today following rumours that its long-time lead guitarist, Abdul Zaman Abdul Kadir, or Joe, 48, is about to leave the band.

“I admit that Wings is having a small problem at the moment, but we are doing our best to iron it out through discussion. I call on fans not to entertain rumours about members leaving or getting dropped, and assure (you) that the four of us will work hard for our concert in Kota Kinabalu next April,” said Awie.

He declined further comment on Joe’s status in the band.

Wings was supposed to have its 30th anniversary concert, themed “Wings 30 Years Live”, at Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on Dec 24, but it had to be postponed to a later date in April.

After the postponement of the concert, social media was abuzz with talks that Joe was the cause of it, and would be replaced by a guest guitarist.

Meanwhile, Search lead singer Suhaimi Abdul Rahman, or Amy, described Wings as a formidable force in Malaysian rock music, and as a friend whose band had occasionally collaborated with Wings in concerts, he said he hopes that they would stick together as a team and continue giving their best to music lovers around the country.

“Search and Wings have worked together several times, and it has always been a joyous moment for us to share the stage together. I pray that Wings will always stay strong and continue to rock as a true Malaysian brand in music,” Amy added.

Joe could not be reached for comment.
