Two arrested for spreading false rumours via Facebok on Sibu 'child kidnappers'

SIBU: Two people have landed themselves in trouble for spreading false rumours on Facebook on the supposed presence of child kidnappers in Sibujaya.

The duo, a security guard and a driver, both 25, were detained at two separate locations at 11.30pm and 2am, respectively, following a tip-off by the public.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar, in a statement today, said their mobile phones were also seized to assist the investigation.

“The duo claimed that they had merely copied and shared the fake warning alert from another Facebook account.

“The alert concerning alleged child kidnappers in Sibu is untrue. Police did not issue such a warning,” said Dev.

He said the posting was accompanied with a photo of two women and two sketches, apparently of the women.

The hoax news, Dev said, also warned schools to be wary of the two women, who are said to be part of a child kidnapping syndicate.

A police report was subsequently lodged against the posting.

The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
