Hikers have close call with lightning strike on Gunung Rajah

BENTONG: Seven hikers have been left traumatised after lightning struck the summit of Gunung Rajah, near here early today.

They were part of a 14-member team who had gone up Gunung Rajah early on Saturday. They were on the summit when the incident occurred at 12.30am today.

District Fire and Rescue Department chief Zainal Abidin Nong Chik said firemen were deployed to the foot of the mountain, after they received information on the incident from their emergency response centre.

"We were about to go up the mountain when policemen, who were accompanying our team, were informed by their counterparts in Kuala Kubu Bharu that the hikers were already making their way down.

"The hikers had parked their vehicles and began their climb from Kuala Kubu Bharu. We were informed some of them were left traumatised by the lightning incident. It was raining at the time," he said when contacted today.

It was learnt that none of the hikers, which included children, were injured and that they were expected to return to Kuala Kubu Bharu where a medical team was on standby to examine them.

The 1,410m Gunung Rajah is accessible from Bentong, Pahang, and Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor.
