#SHOWBIZ: Shima turns to TikTok for income, opens up on health

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran singer Shima, 55, best known for her hit song Teringin, revealed that she relies on TikTok live broadcasts to cover her daily expenses.

Through singing sessions on the platform, she has received generous support from her followers, which helps her cope with her financial needs.

"I earn my livelihood on TikTok. I sing live every night. Alhamdulillah, there's sustenance in this effort.

"This effort helps, but as singers, our health can fluctuate. When I'm sick, I can't perform live, but when I'm well, Alhamdulillah, I sing," she told BH Online.

Shima was met during the Sumbangsih Prihatin event organised by Yayasan Persatuan Pengimport dan Peniaga Kenderaan Melayu Malaysia (Pekema) and the Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia (Karyawan) at a local hotel yesterday.

The singer candidly shared that her income is primarily dependent on donations from her TikTok viewers.

"I treat it like a job. I entertain people, sometimes nightly. I'm not wealthy; I only sing and don't sell products. "But it helps with basic needs like buying fish or adult diapers," she said.

Shima also expressed gratitude for the platform, noting that many of her peers have joined TikTok to supplement their income.

"Several artistes are active on TikTok too, including Safura. Thank God, this platform is a blessing for us."

However, Shima lamented the lack of singing opportunities and the insensitivity of individuals who offer empty promises of work.

"I haven't received any singing offers in a long time. Some people message me on TikTok or WhatsApp, but it's often just empty talk. It's upsetting when people raise false hopes," she said.

Shima, who suffers from lung disease, a slipped disc, and bladder issues, acknowledged the financial challenges of managing her health.

"I've been unable to do heavy work for 10 years and rely on adult diapers, which cost money. Donations like those from Pekema and Karyawan ease my burden."

She closed her business in 2019 due to health concerns and has declined surgery despite her doctor's recommendation.

"I look healthy, but the truth is, I'm not," she said.
