Senior Immigration officer remanded a week more over RM27 mil graft probe

ALOR STAR: The Sessions Court here today granted a week-long remand extension on a senior Immigration Department officer detained in connection with a RM27 million graft case involving the approval of expatriate passes.

Senior Assistant Registrar Rusmini Mat Rashid allowed a seven-day remand extension against the Padang Besar Immigration Office chief until May 21.

Rusmini also allowed four other people, detained in related to the case, to be released on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act (MACC) bail.

The four - a 34-year-old Immigration officer also based in Padang Besar; a 48-year-old contractor; a 30-year-old businessman; and a 53-year-old Datuk - were detained on May 9 and 10.

It was reported the 37-year-old man allegedly received RM1,500 from agents for each of the 18,626 applicants of the passes that he approved.

It was reported that the officer had allegedly started the activities in 2015 while serving as the head of the Expatriate Services Division in Putrajaya.

MACC officers had raided the man’s house in Jitra and seized four luxury cars, a high-powered motorcycle, luxury bags and watches worth more than RM1.5 million.

The commission also froze RM1 million found in a fixed deposit account believed to be linked to the case.
