Melaka cop remanded six days over gambling dens protection racket

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) today obtained a six-day remand order on a police corporal, detained to assist a probe into a protection racket for gambling dens and massage parlours run by senior cops.

Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Wan Ab Rahman granted the remand for MACC to question the policeman, who is attached with Melaka police's Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Division (D7).

The 52-year-old man, who was clad in an orange lock-up attire, arrived at the magistrate's court here at 9am. He was picked up at 2.15pm yesterday at his home in Melaka.

Investigations will be conducted under Sections 16 and 17 of the MACC Act 2009 for giving and accepting gratification.

Yesterday, MACC obtained a six-day remand order for Melaka Tengah district police chief and Jasin district police chief to assist investigations into their alleged involvment in a protection racket for gambling dens and massage parlours.

Four other cops - two inspectors and two assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) were also remanded for six-days in connection with the case.

Their remand order expires on May 22.

They were arrested following simultaneous raids conducted by the MACC between 9.30am and 4.05am in Melaka on Tuesday.

The six men, aged between 31 and 54, were being investigated under the same Sections.

Meanwhile in another case, an inspector attached to the Subang Jaya Police district headquarters (IPD) was remanded today over allegations of receiving a RM5,000 bribe.

The 35-year-old was arrested at 1.10pm at the Subang Jaya IPD yesterday.

It was believed that the suspect was detained for allegedly receiving the amount as an inducement to not file an extortion case.
