Singapore seizes contraband cigarettes worth over RM579,000 from M'sia-registered truck

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) seized 2,250 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in a Malaysia-registered tanker truck last Friday at the Woodlands Checkpoint.

In a statement today, the Authority said the cigarettes were found concealed in a modified compartment of the tanker which was driven by a 36-year-old Malaysian.

The ICA said the driver, the contraband cigarettes and the truck were handed over to the Singapore Customs for investigations.

The vehicle used in the commission of such offences is liable to be forfeited, it said.

The total duty and Goods and Services Tax evaded amounted to about S$174,600 (RM539,514; S$1=RM3.09) and S$12,940 (RM39,984.60) respectively, said the Authority. -- BERNAMA
