Pasar malam trader gets 5 years jail for robbing Uber driver

KUALA LUMPUR: A pasar malam trader was served with five years’ jail and a stroke of the rotan for robbing and assaulting an Uber driver last year.

Sessions Court judge Shamsudin Abdullah handed down the sentence to Ahmad Yushup Masrial, 31, after the latter pleaded guilty to the offence.

Ahmad Yushup admitted to have used an iron rod to hit Mohd Almizi Muhammad and robbed him of his mobile phone and RM500 in cash.

The offence took place at Jalan Semarak here at about 4.30pm on Nov 20, last year.

The father of two pleaded for leniency but deputy public prosecutor Nurakmal Farhan Aziz urged for deterrence saying that it was a serious offence which carries a jail term of up to 20 years.

Nurakmal also asked the court to consider the public’s interest and the frequency of occurrence of such cases that have been frequently reported in newspapers.

“The victim sustained a serious wound on his face because of the attack. Not only did he (victim) sustained physical injuries, he also lost RM500 which was never returned to him,” he said.

The court ordered Ahmad Yushup to serve his jail sentence at the Seremban prison where he is serving time for a drug related offence.

He was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on March 26.
