Four robbers make away with RM2.5mil jewellery in Jalan Kuchai Lama heist

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of robbers carted away 15 trays of jewellery worth at least RM2.5 million from a goldsmith in Jalan Kuchai Lama here today.

Four men, said to be wearing helmets and reflective vests with the word ‘polis’ written on it had barged into the shop located in a departmental store at about 11am.

Two of the men were holding objects believed to be a gun while another two were armed with hammers.

A woman in her 50s said she was manning her shop when the four walked into the shop.

"I did not suspect anything as they were wearing the police’s reflective vests.

"After a while I heard sounds of shattering glasses and one of the men was pointing a gun towards a shop's worker," she said, adding that she immediately ran as she feared for her safety.

The incident happened in less than three minutes.

The men were said to have fled on three motorcycles parked outside the building.

City police Criminal Investigation Department Senior Assistant Commissioner Rusdi Mohd Isa said police were notified of the robbery by a security guard working at the jewellery shop.

The security guard was not able to stop the robbers.

“Police are tracking down the suspects,” he said adding they are also looking into claims that the robbers wore police reflective vests.
