SEMPORNA: Police have arrested a man for hitting a 12-year-old girl with a wood on Pulau Bait near here, yesterday.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Peter Umbuas said the incident occurred about 1pm when the victim was walking home with her three siblings and three friends.
“They had just finished school. On their way home, a 20-year-old man suddenly approached them and hit one of the children three times.
“As a result, the girl sustained injury on the back of her neck. She has lodged a police report and we managed to track down and detain the suspect,” he said.
Umbuas said the victim knew the man, who also lived in Bait area, but did not know his name.
“Based on our interrogation, the man admitted to hitting the victim with a wood for the purpose of fun and to frighten the children,” he said.
He added the man would be investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
If convicted, the offence carries imprisonment for a term which may extend to ten years or with fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishments.
