BAGAN DATUK: Police have arrested an elderly man suspected of molesting a 10-year-old girl here today.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said that the 71-year-old suspect, who is the husband of the victim's former caregiver, was apprehended at a house in a village near Sungai Sumun around 5pm today.
"The man was arrested shortly after the Bagan Datuk district police headquarters received a report from the victim's 39-year-old mother," he said in a statement.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and caning if convicted.
