SHAH ALAM: The owner of a jewellery shop in Section 23 here is glad that the display panels in her premises were equipped with high quality safety glass when six robbers struck on Monday.
The 6.30pm incident saw the robbers, who were wearing full-faced helmets and armed with a pistol, facing difficulty to break the display panels despite using heavy steel hammers.
Eventually, they managed to break only parts of the display glass, making do with what they could grab before fleeing.
It is later estimated that the losses amounted to some RM80,000 worth of jewellery.
The female owner, who only wants to be known as Mummy Joyah by her customers, said the safety glass had saved her business from suffering huge losses.
This, she added, was because the robbers were racing against time and could not wait too long in fear of getting caught by authorities.
"I am very satisfied with the security glass. It has prevented the robbers from clearing out my shop.
"As you can see in the CCTV footage that is viral on social media, the robbers took a long time to break my display panels, and it also prevented them from taking everything," she said when contacted on Thursday.
Mummy Joyah said her company was planning to get security glass of higher grade to replace the existing panels.
"We also plan to hire armed security guard soon, so as to provide better security to my employees and customers," she said.
CCTV footage of the incident had gone viral on social media since Mummy Joyah uploaded it along with several pictures on Tuesday.
Having been shared by other Facebook users for over 36,000 times, the footage have attracted many comments from Netizens who ridiculed the robbers as they were having a hard time trying to get their hands on the jewellery.
It is learnt that the robbers fired at least one shot during the robbery. However, the incident did not involve any casualty.
Shah Alam deputy police chief Superintendent Nek Zaidi Zakaria told reporters that police found a Luger 9mm bullet casing in front of the shopping complex’s entrance where the shop was located.
He said initial investigation revealed that the robbers arrived on three motorcycles.
