KUALA LIPIS: A shop owner not only survived being shot seven times at close range but also managed to call police to his aid.
In the 10pm incident, Hassan Basri Ahmad Sutan Modo was shot in his Toyota Hilux at Jalan Besar Kuala Medang-Sungai Koyan here last night.
Police found him in a weakened state and immediately took him to a clinic at Sungai Koyan for treatment.
It was understood that the 55-year-old victim was driving back to his home in Raub when he was confronted by a group of five men, armed with pistols.
After blocking his vehicle's path with their Proton Wira, he was then shot seven times at close range, before being robbed.
Confirming the incident, district police chief Superintendent Azry Akmar Ayob said that the businessman sustained multiple serious injuries on his body.
"After being shot, the victim was robbed as the group of suspects, who were riding a Proton Wira, ran off with RM10,000 in cash which was inside the man's (victim's) vehicle.
"The police are still investigating whether revenge is a motive in the incident.
"At this time, the police could not ascertain from where the victim got the money and where he wanted to take it," he said today.
Azry said police had taken several statements from witnesses of the shooting and that they are still awaiting for the victim to be in stable condition before his statement could be recorded by investigators.
He said the victim is currently warded at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital (HOSHAS) for treatment of injuries to his leg, hands and body.
He said that the Pahang Contingent Police Headquarters' (IPK) forensic unit is in the midst of collecting fingerprints, bullet casings and other evidence at the scene of the crime.
Azry added that the matter is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms Act and Section 395/397 of the Penal Code.
