KUALA LUMPUR: Police have busted a motorcycle theft gang active in Klang Valley with the arrests of seven people last week.
Following the arrests, the frames of 24 stolen motorcycles and two engine covers dumped by the gang were retrieved from Sungai Kertas in Batu Caves.
Sentul deputy police chief Superintendent Mohamed Rafiq Mohamed Mustafa said the district Criminal Investigation Department arrested two of the gang members in the Batu Caves area on Sept 13 around 12.30am.
“Acting on the information gained from the first arrests, we picked up another five in Selayang... (they are) believed to be the main suspects in several motorcycle theft cases.
“Interrogation led us to Sungai Kertas, Batu Caves, where the frames of the stolen motorcycles were dumped,” he said today.
Rafiq said police enlisted the aid of scuba divers from the Jalan Hang Tuah fire station to recover the motorcycle frames and engine covers from the river.
He said all the suspects did not have a steady job and were believed to have been stealing motorcycles for easy money.
He added that the stolen motorcycles’ components were dismantled and sold to buyers who were looking for cheap but original parts.
The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft.
