KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police have recorded 63 cases involving seizure of homemade guns or locally known as ‘bakakuk’ in the state for the first nine months, this year.
State police commissioner Datuk Ramli Din said bakakuk cases increased four-fold as compared to only 15 cases within the same period between January and September last year.
“Based on report, Tawau district recorded the highest seizure of bakakuk followed by Keningau, Kunak, and Kinabatangan.
“This homemade gun is popular in the state and most bakakuk owners use them for hunting and to protect themselves,” he said after attending a monthly gathering at the Sabah police headquarters, here, this morning.
Present was Sabah deputy police commissioner Datuk Razaruddin Husain and Sabah Criminal Investigation chief Datuk Salehhudin Abdul Rahman.
Ramli stressed bakakuk is an illegal firearm under the Arms Act 1960, and that the police will be aggressive in curbing its misuse.
He advised those who have bakakuk in their possession to surrender it to the nearest police station.
Earlier, Ramli presented a certificate of appreciation to 20 police personnel and staff who have shown excellent work performance this month.
