Kelantan drug seizures plunge amid increased border security: Police

KOTA BARU: Enhanced operations along the Kelantan-Thai border and in other key areas have significantly reduced drug trafficking here.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun reported that police seized RM10.3 million worth of drugs in the first seven months of this year, an 83 per cent decrease from RM59 million seized during the same period last year.

"Our increased checks and operations targeting drug activity, especially along the border and in identified hotspots, have led to a decrease in drug seizures this year," Zaki told a press conference today.

Despite the drop in drug seizures, Zaki noted that the number of arrests made by the police this year has increased compared to last year.

"Between January to July this year, police have arrested 17,756 people for various drug offences.

"During the same period last year, we detained 10,264," he said.

He added methamphetamine pills topped the list of drugs seized followed by cannabis and heroin.

At the same conference, Zaki revealed RM89 million worth of drugs seized by the state contingent were disposed today.

He said the drugs were seized in operations statewide since 1997.

Zaki added the disposal of the drugs, which includes cannabis, ketamine, syabu and methamphetamine, would be made by Syarikat Kualiti Alam Sdn Bhd.
