Sungai Petani men fined for possession of illicit cigarettes, liquor

SUNGAI PETANI: Three men were fined by the magistrate’s court here for possessing illicit cigarettes and liquor which had yet to receive approval from the Customs Department.

The men pleaded guilty when they were separately charged with the offences before magistrate Adibah Husna Zainal Abidin on Tuesday.

Abdul Rahim Rahman, 49, from Kuala Muda was fined RM8,500.80, in default of six months’ jail; and for possessing 10,132 cigarette sticks of various brands worth about RM805 at Abdul Sundry Shop, Kampung Baru Pulau Sayak on Sept 18, 2017 at 1.26pm.

M Kumaguru, 26, was fined RM10,073.30, in default of six months’ jail, for possessing 40 bottles and 268 cans of liquor worth about RM5,036 at premises in Lorong Budiman, Taman Budiman here on March 25, last year at 3.30pm.

Meanwhile, Ang Hua Hock, 23, from Bedong was fined RM2,000, in default of four months’ jail, for possessing 2,360 cigarette sticks worth RM184.40 at Kedai Persiaran Seri Bayu, Taman Bayu, in Sungai Lalang at 1pm on Aug 4, last year.

Their offences were committed under Section 135 (1) 1967, which is punishable under Section 135 (1) (iii) (aa) of the same act.

All three men paid their fines.

The case was prosecuted by Customs Department prosecuting officer Fateen Ilani Jaafar and Karthy Gasedevail Deva Rajoo.
