KUCHING: A Grab car driver was attacked by a group of men who mistook the man to be the boyfriend of the passenger.
In the incident here at Taman Arbi, Tabuan this morning, the victim, who only wants to be known only as Fir, claimed that the assailants included a man in his late 20s, believed to be the brother of his passenger.
A traumatised Fir, 26, said the assailants smashed the mirror of his Nissan Almera causing a damage of RM3,000 in the 3.40am incident.
Recalling the ordeal, Fir said a few minutes before the incident he received a notification to send the woman, in her 20s, from a shopping complex here to the flat.
“Everything was okay throughout the journey until we reached the residential area.
“Upon arrival, I saw a group of at least six men gathered at the area. Some of them were holding metal sticks and spanners,” he said.
Fir said the brother of the passenger who appeared visibly drunk dashed towards his vehicle and started hurling vulgar words at him.
Despite explaining that he was only a Grab car driver, the man went on to threatened Fir and scolded him for going out with his sister until the wee hours of the morning.
“The man later demanded RM20 if I want to leave in peace.
“I rejected the offer and that was when the group started becoming aggressive and damaged my car. I immediately got into the car and fled the scene,” said Fir adding that he lodged a police report at the Tabuan Jaya police station.
Fir claimed this was the first time he had to deal with such form of harrasment since he became a driver with the e-hailing service in October last year.
Kuching district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Ahmad Abang Julai when contacted, confirmed the case.
“Although the victim only lodged the report to claim insurance, police is investigating the case under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief.
“The suspects will be called up for questioning,” he said.
