Penang cops nab two members of notorious Vietnamese robbery gang

BALIK PULAU: Two members of the ‘Tebuk Besi’ gang – notorious for stealing cash and valuables from the safe boxes of factories and schools here – were detained on Sunday.

The duo was arrested in Bayan Lepas and Bayan Baru near here, respectively.

Their two accomplices however, managed to escape and are in the process of being hunted down.

In their most recent heist, the four men – who are from Vietnam – broke into the office of a school in Bayan Lepas at 2.30am on Sunday.

“However, a security guard caught them in action, and managed to apprehend one of them.

“Following that, police arrested another man at about 10.30am, later the same day,” Southwest district police chief Superintendent A. Anbalagan said at a press conference today.

With the arrest of the duo, police believe that they have solved eight cases involving losses amounting to RM235,000 in the district.

“We also seized numerous items used by the gang to break into (the various) premises,” Anbalagan added.

He identified the two men still on the loose as Do Van Thanh and Pham Van Tu, both aged 26.

Those with any information on their whereabouts are urged to inform the southwest district police headquarters at 04-866 2222, he added.
