GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested a man for lodging a false report in which he claimed he was robbed of RM120,000.
The 35-year-old suspect was detained in Sungai Nibong, here, last Thursday.
Southwest district police chief Superintendent A.A. Anbalagan said the suspect had admitted that he had hidden the money inside a hotel room in Bukit Jambul and lodged a false report.
“The money belonged to a friend and was supposed to have been used for an online business,” he said today.
“The suspect had lodged the false report in the hope of cheating his friend of his money.”
Anbalagan said the investigation paper was referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor.
The suspect has been remanded until Thursday to assist in investigations.
Checks showed he had a previous record
for rape.
In his initial report, the suspect claimed that he was walking out of the RHB Bank in i-Avenue towards his car about 1pm last Thursday when two men rode up to him on a motorcycle and snatched the bag.
He had claimed that the bag contained RM121,000 and a RHB Bank cheque book.
