SIK: A woman still in confinement (period after giving birth) and her husband were detained after both tested positive for opiate drugs in a special operation by the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), here, yesterday.
Sik district AADK chief Roslin Baharom said in the operation, they also found the couple's four-year-old child with them.
Roslin said the couple aged 45 and 31, were detained following complaints received by members of the public who noticed the couple who had their child with them, acting suspiciously.
He said, based on investigation, the two have four children, with the youngest only 34-days old.
The couple's eldest child is nine years old.
"The eldest and the second child are being looked after by their grandmother in Kuala Pegang, Baling while the baby is reportedly at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani following complications due to the mother's drug usage.
"The couple is also said to have been involved in drug abuse for the past few years but have no record of arrests.
"The husband is a labourer while the wife is not working and they move around," Roslin informed.
He added that the three were taken to the Sik district AADK office for further action.
"Urine tests saw the two testing positive for opiate drugs and will be investigated under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
"Their child will be handed over to the Sik Welfare Department temporarily pending further action," he said.
