May 6 and 7 set for UMS campus rape trial

KOTA KINABALU: The Sessions Court here has set May 6 and 7 next year for trial of a former Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) security personnel who was charged with attempted rape involving an 18-year-old student.

Judge Elsie Primus fixed the date for accused Arshad Masdin, 28, after his counsel Shahlan Jufri applied for a new date for the trial.

Arshad was charged under Section 376 (2)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction.

He was accused of forcing the UMS student to take off her clothes and tearing her attire at a hostel.

Arshad allegedly committed the offence around noon on 15 July this year.

In an unrelated case, the court also set Jan 30 and 31, 2019 for trial of 28-year-old Yuslin Kulah, who was charged with committing criminal breach of trust two years ago.

Yuslin, who was an assistant of a general manager, had allegedly embezzled money amounting to RM37,783.88, which had been entrusted to her at a hypermarket in Kolombong, Inanam.

She was accused of committing the offence frame under Section 408 of the Penal Code, at 11am on Sept 17, 2016.

The offence, upon conviction, carries a jail term of up to 14 years or a fine.

Deputy public prosecutor Rustam Sanip conducted the prosecution for both cases.
