Cyber criminals target members of mosques, places of worship in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: Committee members from mosques and other places of worship have become victims of cyber criminals in Kelantan.

In view of this, police have advised these members to be extra careful of a group of people who go around offering fake donations and also cash money to the places of worship.

Kelantan Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Superintendent Ahmad Azizul Mohamed said this was the latest modus operandi used by cyber criminals to cheat their victims.

"They will either go to the place or call the committee members saying there was a person willing to donate bags of cement and bricks for construction.

"The committee members are advised not to make any deposit payment to the ‘lorry driver’ who was supposed to deliver the items to the mosque.”

In a recent case, a committee member withdrew money from the mosque's bank account and later transferred it to a lorry driver.

Ahmad Azizul said the committee member only realised he was cheated when he failed to contact both the supposed donor and the lorry driver.

In December alone, he said the state police received three reports on cheating with losses of between RM750 and RM2,200.
