Jawi witness confirms legitimacy of Bung Mokhtar and Zizie's marriage

KUALA LUMPUR: The first day of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and his wife Datin Seri Zizie Izette’s corruption trial started with the authentication of the couple’s marriage.

The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) marriage and family development unit assistant director Mohd Abd Nasir Abdullah, 42, said the two were officially married 10 years ago.

“However, they registered their marriage on April 29, 2014,” he said before confirming the couple’s marriage certificate produced by the Jawi.

Abd Nasir was the first prosecution witness to take a stand in the couple’s corruption trial involving RM2.8 million to obtain approval for Felcra Bhd to invest RM150 million in Public Mutual Berhad Unit Trust.

The couple’s marriage was shrouded in controversy when Bung Mokhtar and Zizie Izette admitted to committing polygamy without consent and marrying without the consent of the marriage registrar, respectively.

On May 3, the outspoken Kinabatangan Member of Parliament pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court to three counts of receiving a total of RM2.8 million in bribes for obtaining approval for Felcra Bhd to make a RM150 million investment in the unit trust products of Public Mutual Bhd.

Actress and producer Zizie Izette pleaded not guilty to three counts of abetting her husband on the same offences, at the same place, date and time under Section 28(1)(c) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and punishable under subsection 24(1), which provides for imprisonment of not more than 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

The trial continues tomorrow before Sessions Court judge Rozina Ayob.
