Drunk driver ploughs car into MyVi, motorcycle in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Police have detained a man, suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol, after he crashed into a car and a motorcycle near Jalan Air Itam early this morning.

The 24-year-old man, who was driving a Proton Waja, was headed toward the city when he lost control of the car and slammed into a Perodua MyVi at a traffic light junction.

The impact of the 4.30am crash sent the Waja into the opposite lane and straight at an oncoming motorcycle.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santung said the 40-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious head and body injuries while the driver of the MyVi, a 22-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident.

The driver of the Waja was not injured. He was later tested positive for alcohol and detained for further questioning.

"The motorcyclist is currently receiving treatment in the red zone of the Penang Hospital," he said.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury.
