Singaporean arrested for bribing Immigration officer

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) here arrested a Singaporean on Saturday for bribing an immigration officer.

The suspect, a 43-year-old company director, was arrested at the Johor MACC office on Saturday afternoon and has been remanded for five days until Oct 29 to help in the investigation.

The arrest followed a report lodged by the immigration officer.

In a statement, MACC said the remand order was issued by Johor Baru magistrate's court assistant registrar Faridatul Farrah Mohd Shukri today.

Investigation showed the suspect had given the immigration officer a RM100 bribe to allow him to enter Malaysia under the Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) programme without undergoing the 14-quarantine in Singapore as stipulated under the programme.

RGL is a programme which allows cross border travel between Malaysia and Singapore for important business or other official purposes.

MACC said the case was being investigated under Section 17(b) of the MACC Act 2009.

Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrest when contacted.
