KOTA BARU: A 32-year-old religious teacher from a madrasah in Machang was detained by police yesterday on suspicion of committing "acts of gross indecency" on a businessman on Tuesday.
Kelantan police chief, Deputy Commissioner Datuk Shafien Mamaat, said the suspect was arrested at the madrasah in Kampung Syukriah at about 3pm.
He said police received a report from the 30-year-old victim at about 2pm yesterday.
"In the report lodged at the Badang police station, the victim claimed that the incident occurred at a hotel in Pantai Cahaya Bulan at about 1am early yesterday.
"In the report, the victim claimed that the suspect, known as Ustaz Syamsul, brought him to the hotel where he was molested," he added.
Shafien said the victim claimed he first met the suspect at a shopping complex in the town area two days before the incident.
"Earlier, before going to the hotel, the victim also claimed that the suspect had touched his hand and kissed him on his cheek while having drinks near Pantai Cahaya Bulan at around 11pm," he said.
Shafien added that the victim, who is single, was later sent to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II hospital for a medical check-up.
He said police have remanded the suspect for four days beginning today to assist in investigations into the case.
The case is being investigated under Section 377D of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of two years, upon conviction.
