Thai woman, with smuggled ciggies, nabbed at police roadblock

GEORGE TOWN: A 38-year-old Thai woman was nabbed by police at a roadblock last night with 2,100 sticks of smuggled cigarettes.

In the 8.30pm incident, a team of police was carrying checks at the roadblock in Jalan Pangkor here when they stopped the woman's Perodua Myvi.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong said checks at the rear passenger seats led police to 105 cigarette boxes of various brands, believed to have been smuggled into the country.

The brands include Manchester, Chesterfield, Pallmall, Marlboro, Sempoerna, Mavius, Dunhill, L&M KYO, LD, Peter Stuyvesant, Bond, Pragon and Rothman with total worth of RM2,250.

"We arrested the driver and seized the smuggled items from her. She admitted that she had purchased the cigarettes to be sold at her sundry shop in Tanjung Tokong," he said, adding that the woman was on her way back home in Sungai Pinang from her shop in Tanjung Tokong, about 4km away when she was stopped.

Soffian said police also seized the car, which was registered under the name of the woman's husband.

She is currently under remand for two days.

The case is investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
