Kelantan drug addicts continue to mix cough mixture with ketum leaves

PASIR MAS: Some drug addicts in state continue to abuse ketum leaves by mixing its juice with cough mixture for a "higher" effect.

The tactic was discovered following the latest seizure by the General Operations Force (GOF) after they seized 1,080 bottles of cough mixture believed to contain codeine.

GOF Ninth Battalion commanding officer Superintendent Nor Azizan Yusof said the cough mixture was seized from a lorry in an operation at Kampung Tal Tujuh here on Sunday.

"A GOF team was conducting its Ops Benteng when they saw the lorry passing the area at 4pm.

"Upon checking the vehicle, they discovered several boxes containing cough mixture.

"They later detained the 48-year-old lorry driver who is a local," he said in a statement.

Nor Azizan said investigations showed that the cough mixture worth about RM16,000 was to be distributed to drug addicts in the Pasir Mas area.

"Early investigations also revealed that the cough mixture will be mixed with ketum juice for more effect," he said.

He said the suspect would be held for further investigations.

The lorry valued at about RM50,000 was also seized.
