KUALA LUMPUR: The driver of the trailer that crashed into an under construction flyover along the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) near Desa Tun Razak here yesterday has tested positive for drugs.
SUKE is a 31.8-kilometre controlled-access highway in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
City Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Assistant Commisioner Zulkefly Yahya said the 40-year-old suspect tested positive for methamphetamine after a urine test at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.
The driver of the van ferrying factory workers, Muhd Fairus Mohd Yusof sustained a broken left shoulder, swelling to his lungs and internal bleeding in the 6pm incident.
"Two others in the van, Zaitun Zainal, 54, sustained injuries to her left leg while Zakiyyah Yakop, 51, injured her left calf.
"The victims who died were Nurina Edwin Abdullah, 47, and Norhayati Abdullah, 42, he said in a statement today.
Preliminary investigations found that the accident is believed to have occurred after the trailer went through part of the MRR2 Highway near Bandar Tasik Selatan.
When the vehicle was passing through the location, it hit the flyover causing some materials to crash onto a van travelling from Ampang towards the Southern Integrated Terminal (TBS) in Bandar Tasik Selatan here.
"At the time of the accident, the van was on its way to send passengers to their place of work at the Sensata Technologies factory in USJ1, Subang Jaya.
"The driver of the trailer has been remanded under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 by the Dang Wangi Narcotics Criminal Investigations Department," said Zulkefly.
Meanwhile a spokesperson for highway operator, Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) said the stretch of road has been cleared of the debris as of 6am today and open to traffic.
