Bus driver in fatal accident tests positive for drugs

TAWAU: A school bus driver involved in an accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old teenager at Batu 3, Jalan Tawau-Kalabakan, near here yesterday, has tested positive for drugs.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said test results confirmed the 37-year-old man was under the influence of drugs.

Further investigations also revealed that the suspect did not possess a valid driving licence.

"The suspect is currently remanded to assist with the investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he said in a statement today.

Jasmin said in the 2pm accident, the victim, who was riding a motorcycle, was trapped under the school bus before being extricated by the fire department.

"Members of the public who witnessed or have information about the accident are urged to come forward to the traffic office, Tawau IPD, to assist in the investigation," he said.

Meanwhile, Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Jemishin Ujin, said a team of 10 firemen and one fire engine were dispatched to the scene, 86km away, upon receiving a call at 2.10pm.

Upon arrival, it was found that the accident involved a school bus and a motorcycle.

"A motorcyclist was trapped under the bus, and the fire department used special equipment to extricate the victim. The operation concluded at 4.50pm.
