Kelantan police smash 2 major drug smuggling syndicates

KOTA BARU: The state police believed they have smashed two major drug smuggling syndicates with the seizure of RM6.9 million worth of pills and syabu recently.

Fourteen people, including four Thai women, were detained in the three-day operation from May 5 until yesterday (May 8).

Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said the operations were carried out in four separate locations here and in Tanah Merah.

Seven cars, three motorcycles, jewelleries and some cash were also seized in the operation.

"The drugs seized comprised 642,000 pills and 14.9kg of syabu which are believed to be smuggled in from a neighbouring country," he told a Press conference here today.

Shafien said police detained one of the nine men in an operation in Kota Baru on May 5, where they seized 84,000 of the pills, car, motocyle and some cash.

"In the second raid in Tanah Merah following day, police detained another man for possession of 378,000 pills. A car was also seized in the operation," he added.

On Friday, he said police arrested the third man at a house in Kota Baru and seized another 180,000 pills.

"During the raid, police seized two cars, two motorcycles, jewellery and some cash.

"In the last raid in Mulong yesterday, police detained two men and seized 14.9kg of syabu worth about RM540,000 and some cash."

In a follow-up operation also in Mulong, he said police detained four other men and four Thai women including one with a 'Datin' title and an owner of a cosmetic company.

"Following their arrests, police seized four cars, cash and jewellery."

Shafien said initial investigation showed that the pills and the drugs would be distributed to east coast states.

"Our investigation also revealed that the drugs are for the consumption of more than 300,000 addicts in the three states."

He said the 14 people, aged between 23 and 48, have been remanded to assist police investigations.
