PETALING JAYA: A couple are expected to be charged tomorrow in connection with the death of a 9-month-old baby under their care on April 27.
The couple, both aged 36, had taken the unconscious infant to a hospital emergency unit where the baby was declared dead.
Preliminary investigations at the hospital showed signs of sexual abuse, including bleeding in the anus and injuries to the mouth.
A post-mortem later confirmed the sexual abuse and the pair were detained on April 29 at their home in PJU 1/42.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said both the suspects tested positive for methamphetamine abuse at the time of their arrest.
"Police searched the couple's home and found evidence linked to the baby's death, including some baby clothes and a sex toy that is believed to have been used in the crime," he said.
He said police obtained a remand order to investigate the couple from April 30 till May 12.
"Check also showed the husband had two previous records for drug related offences while the wife did not have any past record.
"The male suspect is expected to be charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder while the wife has agreed to become a prosecution witness in the case tomorrow."
He said the wife however will not walk free as she too will be charged under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for using and testing positive for methamphetamine.
Fakhrudin added that police believe the male suspect had forced a blunt object into the baby's anus and covered the mouth with his hands supposedly to stop the cries.
On an unrelated murder at a building under construction in Damansara Perdana on May 6, Fakhrudin said police detained a 24-year-old man about 4.25pm on Sunday at a parking area in Bandar Sunway.
Police found that the suspect actually lives in an apartment near the murder scene.
Upon his arrest, investigators found injuries consistent with a struggle on both his hands.
Fakhrudin said the man had gone to a private hospital to seek treatment where he received about 100 stitches for injuries on both arms.
"About 6.30pm (Sunday), the suspect led police to a house in Taman Sri Kuching in KL where police confiscated several pieces of clothing belonging to the suspect and later found more clothes in the suspect's vehicle parked at a building in Subang Jaya.
"Police believe the suspect and deceased had a misunderstanding over drug distribution money, which led to a fight that resulted in him stabbing his friend. The suspect then allegedly tossed the victim out his apartment balcony (and the body landed at the construction site)," he said, adding that the suspect did not have any past records and tested positive for cannabis.
He said the suspect has been remanded until May 16 for investigations under Section 302 for murder.
