ALOR GAJAH: A 38-year-old Nepalese woman was arrested after she was suspected of hiding the birth of a baby boy, whose body was found in a room at the workers' quarters, here.
The woman, who is also a factory worker, was nabbed at about noon yesterday, while she was receiving treatment at the Melaka Hospital.
Alor Gajah district police chief Superintendent Arshad Abu said his team received a phone call from a factory worker at about 9.10am yesterday, claiming that a Nepalese woman had given birth.
He said a team of policemen, together with forensics rushed to the scene and found the baby's body, still attached with the umbilical cord in a black plastic bag.
"Preliminary investigation found that around 1.30am on Monday, the suspect had asked the factory van driver to take her to a panel clinic, as she claimed her leg was in pain.
"The suspect was referred to the Alor Gajah Hospital because doctors had suspected that she had a miscarriage. She was then referred to the Melaka Hospital for consultation," he said.
Arshad said the factory manager had re-checked the suspects' room at about 8am yesterday where he found the baby's body and contacted police.
"The baby is believed to be two days old, and the remains were sent to the Forensic Department at the Melaka Hospital for an autopsy.
"Currently, the police are also tracking down the suspects' boyfriend, who is also 38-years-old.
"It is understood that they do not work at the same place," he said.
Arshad said the woman would be brought to court today to obtain a remand order.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 318 of the Penal Code.
